Community “Bands Together” to Fight Hunger at Helping Hands Kickoff Event
The University of Findlay’s 20th Annual Helping Hands Food Drive struck the right note at its kickoff event, Band Against Hunger, on Tuesday, October 28. The community event, held at Findlay High School, brought together more than 400 attendees and 312 student musicians from four area schools, raising a total of 880.6 pounds of food and $195.00 in monetary donations for CHOPIN Hall.
The event featured spirited performances from local marching bands and a friendly competition to see which school could collect the most food per student. Findlay High School currently leads the challenge, collecting an impressive 6.01 pounds per student, followed by McComb High School in second place and North Baltimore High School in third.
The Band Against Hunger showcase marked the official kickoff to this year’s food drive, themed “Band Together to Fight Hunger.” The evening began with a Findlay-Hancock County Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony and high-energy performances celebrating community, creativity, and compassion.
This event is just one of several taking place throughout the week as part of the Helping Hands Food Drive:

UF Campus Challenge (Oct. 29): Campus offices compete in food collection and door decorating for the Emsweller Helping Hands Cup.

Make and Partake Workshop (Oct. 29): Faculty, staff, and friends gather to create and donate in support of the drive.

Can-struction Competition (Begins Oct. 30/31): Student teams design sculptures made from canned goods.

Golden Can School Competition (Nov. 4): Hancock County schools vie for the most food collected per student.

Official Collection Day (Nov. 5): Donations can be made at UF’s Center for Student Life from 7:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m.

Awards Ceremony (Nov. 6): Top contributors and creative entries will be recognized at noon.
All donations directly benefit CHOPIN Hall, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Hancock County residents in need. Last year’s drive brought in 265,216 pounds of food, and organizers hope this milestone year will inspire the community to surpass that total. Founded in 2005 by the University of Findlay, the Helping Hands Food Drive has grown into a county-wide tradition uniting schools, businesses, and individuals to fight food insecurity. All donations directly support CHOPIN Hall (Christians Helping Other People in Need), which provides food and essential items to local families.
