Oilers Drop Opener Against Lee
Cleveland, Tenn. - The University of Findlay men's soccer team, who ranked number 16 in the national preseason poll, opened up their season on Sunday, Sep. 7 with a match-up against Lee University. The reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) tournament champion Oilers would fall in the opener, as the Flames would take the 3-1 victory. Findlay drops to 0-1 to begin the campaign, while Lee rises to 2-0.
The first half of play would be a defensive battle, as there would be a combined five shots on goal, all turned away by the team's respective keepers. The highlight of the half came in the 38th minute, when reigning G-MAC goalkeeper of the year Keegan Grant turned away a penalty kick attempt from the flames.
Lee would finally break the ice in the second half of play, scoring in the 47th and 56th minutes to give them a two goal advantage. Findlay would respond with a goal of their own in the 68th minute, cutting the lead in half. Finding the back of the net was junior Leo Egerer, his first as a member of the Oilers.
The game would be put on ice in the 89th minute, as once again Lee would score and give them a 3-1 lead with less than a minute in regulation.
Junior Tyler Pawlicki looked sharp for the Oilers in his first appearance of the year, as he recorded two shots and had the lone assist in the game for the Orange and Black.
The Oilers will be back in action on Wednesday, Sep. 10, as they travel to Indiana to take on Indianapolis. The match will kick off at 1 pm.
