The Arbor Day Foundation has named the University of Findlay a higher education Tree Campus for the ninth consecutive year; the University will be honored at an Awards Ceremony on April 16. The University will then host a campus and community Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration on April 25, followed by a Homegrown Habitat How-To on April 26.
“Being a Tree Campus encourages us to work toward our goal of being a model of urban forestry,” said Ben Dolan, professor of biology and chair of the Tree Campus Advisory Committee. “A high-quality urban forest has been demonstrated to improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and support biodiversity… A well-maintained urban forest also boosts campus aesthetics, making for a pleasant community to work, study, and live in.”
The public is invited to the Northwest Ohio Tree City and Tree Campus Award Ceremony on April 16 from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. in Bowling Green City Park. There, the University of Findlay will be recognized for its 2024 Tree Campus status. Tickets are required to attend.
Open to students and the public, the University’s Tree Campus Advisory Committee will plant a tree on campus and provide learning activities about environmental sustainability from student organizations on April 25 for Arbor Day and Earth Day. The celebration will take place on the Great Lawn in front of the Center for Student Life and College of Business in the afternoon and will include food and games.
The following day, Dolan will host a Homegrown Habitat How-To workshop on April 26 at 8:30 a.m. at the Alumni Memorial Union. Kara Maynard and Courtney Denning from Deeply Rooted Landscapes, a Tipp City design firm and nursery dedicated to native landscapes, will lead the workshop. The workshop will help participants overcome common native gardening challenges such as sourcing and selecting appropriate plants. The workshop is open to the public and tickets for the event are $15.
Dolan also noted that the Tree Campus program encourages the University to promote education and community engagement through student learning, service projects, and local partnerships with the City of Findlay and commercial arborists. Last year, following its Tree Care Plan established in May 2016, the University planted 40 trees across campus.
