University of Findlay faculty are gearing up to help facilitate the seventh annual Prime the Pump college prep program, which takes place August 9-14. This week-long program prepares first-year students for a successful start to their college journey.

What started as a collaboration between UF’s College of Science and College of Pharmacy has developed into a popular choice for students pursuing science-based careers as well as those seeking to brush up on skills ahead of the academic year.

“I think this is the best thing UF offers to incoming students,” said Cindy Fitzpatrick, camp administrator for Prime the Pump. “First-year students come to campus with differing backgrounds from their high schools. So, this is a way for the students to learn about the science and math expectations in a college course.”

Academic Preparation and Ongoing Support

The workshop-style sessions are fittingly taught by professors across the science and math disciplines at UF.

“Students get a sneak peek at chemistry and biology courses, which include lab experiences. They also receive refreshers in math content that is foundational for the science-based studies,” said Katy August, the program’s faculty liaison and member of UF’s mathematics department.

As an added benefit, the program’s teaching faculty go on to mentor the Prime the Pump students throughout their time at the University. According to Fitzpatrick, this allows students to settle into their regular classrooms feeling valued, willing to ask questions, and, in turn, ask for help when needed.

“We have seen first semester grades improve for the students each year,” said Fitzpatrick. “Through evaluations of the program, each attendee commented that they would participate again if they could.”

Early Move-In and Campus Connection

Another perk for Prime the Pump students is moving into their dormitory room early. Since the student prep week begins on Saturday, August 9, program participants move in that same day. The rest of the new students will arrive to campus on Thursday, August 14.

“After being here a few days early, the students no longer feel new on the first day of the semester,” said August. “By the time the semester begins, these students have already gained valuable experiences. Such as taking in the classroom setting and teachings from some of the faculty in their field, getting acquainted with key resources on campus, settling into their dorm room, and creating friendships that will likely continue throughout their lives.”

Being on campus a week early benefits more than just the Prime the Pump members. This head start allows the group to build strong connections within the campus community during orientation and beyond.

“When the rest of the students arrive on move-in day, the Prime participants can help with acclamation to the University. They are secure in knowing the campus, and they can share their knowledge with the rest of the Class of 2029,” Fitzpatrick explained.

Balancing Academics with Fun

Another key feature of the program is its focus on fun, interactive experiences. These take place both in the classroom and through planned recreational activities. In fact, the program begins with a pizza party on Saturday evening, followed by activities to encourage engagement.
